Gauteng education dept may scrap June/winter school recess – Centurion Rekord

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced the possibility of scrapping the June/winter school recess.

GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said “given the uncertainty with time lost due to the Covid-19 virus, we are intending to commence engagements with the education sector stakeholders about the possibility of scrapping the June/winter school recess.”

He said this was due to an agreement that must be adopted.

“This positive gesture will go a long way in taking our education forward.”

Mabona reiterated that additional education material and E-content could be accessed by learners during the 21 day lockdown.

The GDE said parents and learners may access the following educational websites and additional platforms for necessary content:

The department said they also reached partnership agreements with the DSTV, Telkom and Vodacom.

It said parents could visit that website

“This is a great feature to give the audience coverage of these companies.”

The DSTV partnership includes:

– Mindset on Channel 318 which will carry all grades except grade 4 to 9
– Pop-up on Channel 317 which will carry grade 4 to 9. This channel will launch on 1 April
– All these channels will be made available to all Access subscribers.
