Some areas in Pretoria still have unplaced Grade 8 applicants for the year 2020, despite the figure reducing by 0.03 percent.
The Gauteng Department of Education has announced that the number of unplaced learners has reduced to 619 at 17:00 on Friday, 29 November.
According to the department, there were still learners who were not yet placed, the majority of whom come from areas such as Pretoria North, Pretoria West and Soshanguve.
Other areas included Meredale in Johannesburg Central, Alberton, Brackenhurst and Boksburg in Ekurhuleni South, Dalpark and Springs in Gauteng East, Krugersdorp and Randfontein in Gauteng West as well as Randburg in Johannesburg North.
“Principals of schools in high-pressure areas are commended for willingly assisting the process by increasing their capacities to accommodate learners who live close to the schools,” the department said in a statement.
“This contributed significantly to placement. The department is replenishing the resourcing at such schools before the commencement of the 2020 academic year.”
The department said all qualifying Grade 1 applicants have been placed.
Parents who have not yet received SMSes are urged to log on to the system to check placement updates.
The department said it remained committed to placing the remaining 619 learners by 30 November.
“The department wishes to reiterate its sincerest apologies for any inconvenience experienced. We thank all parents for their patience during this busy period, and wish all learners well for the next academic year.” said MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
