The Lyttelton police and two suspected car thieves were involved in a high-speed chase through the streets of Doringkloof on Tuesday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the car being pursued was reported stolen in Randburg last month.
“Around 1 200 members of our roving team were on duty when they noticed the suspicious silver Toyota Yaris,” Miller said.
“When the members approached it to investigate, the car sped off.”
The chase then took place through Doringkloof.
“The high-speed chase required the assistance of other police units who soon joined in,” Miller said.
“The car was stopped in Nellmapius Drive, Pierre van Ryneveld.
“The driver and his passenger were immediately arrested.”
The police were able to determine that the licence plates on the car were fake and the car was confirmed to be the one stolen in Randburg.
“One of the men arrested has since been linked to seven other cases from around Gauteng,” Miller said.
“These range from housebreakings to car thefts.”
The two will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
“We are investigating the possibility of linking them and the car to further cases of house break-ins as well as armed robberies in and around our policing area.”
